Meta has decided to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to verify the age of Instagram users.
This AI tool will determine the user’s real age, even if they provide incorrect information.
If a user provides false age information, the AI technology will automatically transfer users under the age of 18 to “Teen” accounts.
Meta introduced Teen accounts in September 2024 for users aged 13 to 17, with various restrictions imposed to ensure the safety of young users.
Previously, there was no method to verify the actual age of users using the service.
To address this, Meta has developed a software tool called the “adult classifier.” This tool is designed to split users into two groups: one for those aged 18 and older, and another for users under the age of 18.
Meta’s Youth and Social Impact Director, Allison Hartnet, explained that the tool will scan a user’s profile to analyze how they interact with content, and also examine their follower list to determine their age.
In fact, birthday messages will also help the tool determine the user’s real age.
The use of this tool is expected to begin in 2025.
