The Organizing Committee of the 2024 Olympic Games has postponed the men’s triathlon event scheduled for 8:00 am on July 30 following a meeting today about water quality in the River Seine.
The meeting, held at 3.30am, was attended by representatives of Paris 2024, World Triathlon, their technical and medical delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Île-de Prefecture – Region of France.
Due to unsatisfactory water quality levels in the Seine, the event has been postponed to July 31 at 10:45.
The women’s triathlon will continue as scheduled on July 31 at 8:00 a.m.
Both events are dependent on upcoming water tests meeting World Triathlon’s established safe swimming limits. The next standby day is set for August 2 for further consideration.
Paris 2024 and World Triathlon have emphasized that athlete health remains their top priority.
Tests carried out today showed that the water quality in the Seine was not sufficient to ensure the safety of the athletes. Rainfall on July 26 and 27 affected water quality and necessitated a postponement. Although there has been some improvement, some areas of the swimming course still exceed acceptable limits.
Athletes receive up-to-date postponement information and real-time situational information. There will be a meeting between World Triathlon and the coaches at 8:00 a.m. to discuss more information and an updated schedule for July 31. Coaches will receive meeting links soon.
