Former Australian Test wicket-keeper Mattew Wade has decided to bid farewell to the red ball while remaining committed to cricket’s shorter formats.
In an announcement late on Friday, the 36-year-old revealed his decision ahead of the upcoming Sheffield Shield final. This final will mark his 166th and final first-class appearance as Tasmania faces Western Australia.
Wade clarified that his decision was not influenced by any decline in his performance or lack of contribution. Instead, he acknowledged the emergence of younger talent that essentially pushed him to the decision.
“I’m not stepping down because of a drop in performance or a sense of inadequacy,” he declared. “It’s more about the arrival of younger players who have earned their place.”

Having represented Australia in 36 Tests between 2012 and 2021 as both a wicketkeeper and a specialist batsman, Wade will remain active in ODI and T20 cricket.
Explaining his choice, he said: “By focusing on the shorter formats, I am trying to increase my physical strength, spend more time in the gym, and secure a longer career in this arena.”
Wade’s commitment to the game is evident as he postponed his participation in the Indian Premier League to compete in the upcoming Shield final.
