A gas leak caused a massive explosion at Bahawalpur Islamic University (IUB), which brought down the Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies building without catching fire.
Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and pulled seven injured people out of the wreckage. One of the victims, a student named Ashfaq, suffered severe burns on 80 percent of his body and was immediately rushed to the Multan Burn Center for specialized care.
His condition remains serious and paramedics are working around the clock to stabilize him.
Dr Shazia Anjum gave an account of the incident and explained: “It is clear that gas was leaking and pressure was building up.
After a little ignition, it exploded and caused the building to collapse without actually catching fire. The absence of fire indicates that the materials inside the building did not ignite, preventing further damage.”
Bahawalpur Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar visited the affected area and confirmed that forensic teams would be involved to determine the exact cause of the blast.
