In a development, the first case of polio in the last 16 years was reported in Union Council Number 4 in Islamabad. The latest case marks a significant setback in the country’s ongoing fight against polio, bringing the total number of cases nationwide to 17 this year.
Ayesha Raza Farooq, the health officer, confirmed the case and raised alarm over the resurgence of the virus in the capital after more than a decade.
Meanwhile, Anwar-ul-Haq, coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Centre, said: “We are intensifying efforts to reach every child with the polio vaccine,” underscoring the government’s renewed commitment to eradicate the virus. Health authorities are stepping up vaccination campaigns to prevent further cases as the polio virus continues to pose a threat to children in the country.
