Former Pakistan paceman Mohammad Amir recently revealed the reason behind missing the Pakistan Super League season 9 match against Karachi Kings.
In an interview with a local sports channel, Amir commented on his decision to take a break, saying it was suggested by the team’s head coach Shane Watson to avoid fatigue later in the competition.
“I have been playing cricket continuously and head coach Shane Watson suggested taking a break now rather than taking a break in the later stages of the competition,” Amir said.
Amir stressed the importance of carefully selecting the T20 leagues he will be participating in and highlighted the need for improvement within the leagues.
“Players need to be seen as professionals who determine which leagues to play in and which not to. It is essential to see how the league is improving,” he added.
Amir emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between playing multiple leagues and ensuring quality cricket.
“Getting paid is good, but if there is no level of play, it is not beneficial. Play two to three leagues, but play in a way that improves the cricket and also gives a break. A break is essential for a fast bowler; otherwise, injuries can happen,” he said.
Talking about franchise cricket, Amir emphasized the importance of building strong team combinations.
“In franchise cricket, the most important thing is to create the best combination by ticking all the boxes. Quetta has both bowling and batting specialists,” said Amir.
Amir also praised Saud Shakeel in the ongoing tournament.
“Saud Shakeel’s opening proved to be a positive addition. People doubted Saud but he proved himself with surprising decisions. Power play in batting and bowling is key. Our spinners are consistently taking wickets in the middle overs. The key to Quetta’s success is a great combination.” he added.
Regarding the Pakistan T20 team and the upcoming World Cup, Amir expressed confidence in the current bowlers.
“Pakistan has good T20 bowlers and the current ones can perform well in West Indies in the T20 World Cup,” Amir said.
Amir also weighed in on the contractual issues facing the players and urged private resolution of such matters.
“The issue of Haris Rauf’s contract would be better resolved behind closed doors. Matters between players and boards should not be discussed publicly. If the player is part of the central contract, he also cannot say no to the board,” he concluded.
