MACO: Rescue operations are underway after a landslide buried houses and two buses in a southern Philippine province, killing at least six people and injuring 31, disaster officials said on Wednesday (Feb 7).
A landslide hit outside a gold mining site in Maco, Davao de Oro province on Tuesday (Feb 6) night, where buses were recruiting workers, mine operator Apex Mining said.
As of 11:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) on Wednesday, 62 Apex Mining employees were accounted for, while 45 other employees were still being monitored, the company said. More than 700 families in the affected areas have been evacuated, disaster agency Maco said in a separate statement.
The northeast monsoon and a depression brought rain to the southern Mindanao region between January 28 and February 2, resulting in deadly floods and landslides, data from the national disaster agency showed.
