Lahore School Showcases Waste Segregation, Recycling and Green Initiatives Under Punjab Certification Programme

LAHORE, Pakistan: Crescent School’s Girls Campus in Shadman has showcased a range of environmental initiatives during a visit by the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department (EPCCD), Government of Punjab, under the Punjab Green School Certification Program (PGSCP).

The visit highlighted the school’s efforts to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices among students, including air quality monitoring displays, waste segregation, recycling and tree plantation.

Among the initiatives reviewed were Air Quality Index (AQI) display boards, a five-bin waste segregation system and recycling activities. The school has also introduced creative upcycling initiatives, including transforming old clothes into fashion products to demonstrate how discarded materials can be reused.

Other activities include environmental poster competitions and the active participation of Environmental Clubs, which provide students with opportunities to engage in environmental education and awareness campaigns.

The visit was attended by Crescent School Principal Ms. Sophia, Crescent Schools Trustee and EPCCD Ambassador Ms. Sam Ali Dada, and Dr. Ambreen Lateef, Deputy Secretary (Climate Change) at EPCCD. Representatives of the school and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, were also present.

The Environment Protection and Climate Change Department appreciated the school management, teachers and students for their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Promoting Climate Awareness Through Education

School-based environmental initiatives can help students develop practical habits related to waste reduction, recycling, resource conservation and air quality awareness.

Waste segregation enables recyclable materials to be separated more effectively, while upcycling can extend the useful life of discarded products and reduce unnecessary waste. Tree plantation and environmental clubs can further encourage students to take part in local sustainability efforts.

Through the Punjab Green School Certification Program, such activities support efforts to integrate environmental responsibility into school life and encourage young people to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The initiative also aligns with the broader vision of a climate-resilient Punjab by promoting environmental awareness and sustainable habits among the next generation.
