KP Advances Climate-Smart Agriculture with Modern Machinery, Solar Tube Wells and Land Restoration

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is pursuing a series of initiatives aimed at modernising agriculture, improving farm productivity and creating better economic opportunities for farmers through modern machinery, solar energy and the restoration of cultivable land.

The provincial government says the measures are being implemented under its broader vision of agricultural reform and rural economic development, with a focus on introducing modern technologies and improving productivity across the province.

Three major initiatives in the agricultural engineering sector are currently focused on farm mechanisation, solar-powered irrigation and the rehabilitation of uncultivated land.

400 modern agricultural machines for farmers

Under a farm machinery programme, 400 modern agricultural machines are being provided to farmers across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Of these, 250 machines are being allocated to farmers in the merged districts, while 150 are being provided in the settled districts.

The project has an estimated cost of around Rs320 million. Under the scheme, farmers are required to contribute only 20 percent of the machinery cost, while the remaining 80 percent is paid to the company after completion of the final inspection.

Greater access to modern machinery can help reduce labour constraints, improve farm efficiency and support timely agricultural operations, particularly for small and medium-sized farmers.

400 agricultural tube wells to be solarised

The provincial government is also implementing a solarisation programme to convert 400 agricultural tube wells to solar power.

So far, 235 tube wells have reportedly been solarised, including 151 in settled districts and 84 in the merged districts.

The project, costing approximately Rs1.12 billion, is expected to benefit around 1,000 farmers and create approximately 2,500 employment opportunities.

The shift from conventional energy sources to solar-powered irrigation could reduce farmers’ exposure to rising energy costs while promoting the use of renewable energy in agriculture.

Efficient irrigation and sustainable management of water resources are becoming increasingly important as climate change intensifies pressure on water availability across Pakistan.

5,000 acres of barren land targeted for restoration

Another initiative aims to restore 5,000 acres of barren land and bring it into agricultural production.

The target includes 3,400 acres in settled districts and 1,600 acres in the merged districts.

With an estimated cost of around Rs315 million, the project is expected to benefit approximately 1,000 farmers and generate around 2,500 employment opportunities.

Bringing currently unproductive land into cultivation could expand the province’s productive agricultural base while creating new livelihood opportunities in rural communities.

Agriculture and climate resilience

The initiatives come at a time when Pakistan’s agricultural sector is facing increasing pressure from climate change, water scarcity, extreme weather and rising production costs.

Modern farm machinery, renewable-energy-powered irrigation and land restoration can contribute to greater agricultural resilience when combined with efficient water management, climate-smart farming practices and appropriate crop choices.

A stronger and more resilient agricultural sector is also critical for food security, rural employment and the economic well-being of farming communities.

The KP initiatives represent an effort to combine technology, renewable energy and land development to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen rural livelihoods.

Modern machinery, solar energy and expanded cultivable land could provide Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s farmers with a pathway towards greater productivity and a more resilient agricultural future.
