KHAIRPUR, September 30: A total of 1,000 plants, including shade and fruit trees, have been distributed and planted across six villages in Khairpur district through women-led Village Organizations (VOs).
The plantation drive continued in Khuda Bux Abro, Muhammad Panah Sheikh, Sono Khan Jalbani, Abdul Hakeem Sheikh, Karam Khan Jalbani and Matto Sheikh villages on September 29 and 30.
Of the 1,000 plants, 840 were shade trees and 160 were fruit trees. The species included Neem, Chinaberry, Moringa, Siris, Mango, Orange, Lemon, Fig and Jamun.
Before the distribution, participatory awareness sessions were held to explain the role of trees in improving local microclimates, supporting environmental sustainability and strengthening household nutrition security.
Participants were also given practical guidance on planting, watering, fencing and regular care to improve the survival of the newly planted trees.
Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative and pledged to take responsibility for the proper care and survival of the plants.
The Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) is supporting the integration of green spaces and tree plantation around residential areas to improve microclimatic conditions, environmental quality and the overall habitability of village settlements.
The plantation initiative is aimed at reducing local heat stress through increased shade and vegetation, promoting climate-resilient village development and providing fruit trees that can contribute to household nutrition and dietary diversity.
Planting and maintaining trees in rural settlements can also provide longer-term environmental benefits by improving local green cover and creating more comfortable living spaces for communities.
