KARACHI: Raahem Shafique, an International Baccalaureate (IB) student at The International School Karachi, has undertaken a mangrove plantation initiative at Sandspit as part of his Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Project.
The initiative focuses on protecting Karachi’s coastal environment, promoting awareness of mangrove conservation and encouraging young people to take practical steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
Mangroves play an important role in coastal ecosystems by providing habitats for marine life, supporting biodiversity and helping protect shorelines from erosion. They also contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon in their biomass and coastal soils.
Through his project, Shafique aims to highlight the importance of conserving these valuable ecosystems and inspire fellow students and young people to participate in environmental protection.
The initiative underscores the role of youth-led action in addressing environmental challenges and preserving Karachi’s natural coastal heritage for future generations.
It also demonstrates how school-based projects can encourage students to connect learning with practical environmental action and develop a stronger sense of responsibility towards nature.
