Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) issued a stern warning to the government on Sunday, suggesting that a nationwide appeal against payment of electricity bills may be initiated if their demands are not met.
This statement was made during the ongoing party meeting at Liaquat Bagh, which has now entered its tenth day.
Addressing the protesters, Hafiz Naeem stressed that Jamaat-e-Islami is committed to its seven-point program and is not willing to compromise on its demands.
He called on the Prime Minister to immediately take measures to reduce electricity bills, terming it necessary for the rulers’ own political survival.
The Ji leader accused the government of duplicity and claimed that while negotiations are ongoing, the government’s subsequent actions are contrary to the promises made during the discussions.
Hafiz Naeem also mocked the MQM for its political opportunism and claimed that the party was joining various governments only to secure its share of power and resources.
He expressed frustration at the government’s failure to address the underlying issues raised during the sit-in, including the high cost of living and excessive utility bills.
The ongoing sit-in, which has been central to Jamaat-e-Islami’s campaign, aims to address rising inflation and soaring electricity prices. Despite lengthy negotiations, the party has so far failed to reach a consensus with the government.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also hinted at the imminent announcement of a dharna (sit-in) in Lahore over the next few days, signaling an escalation in their protest strategy.
