Jamaat-e-Islami, govt strike deal, ends sit-in against inflated electricity prices

Jamaat-e-Islami’s sit-in at Murree Road, which lasted up to 14 days, culminated after the government and Ji reached an agreement.

The Rawalpindi Solid Waste Management teams cleaned the seating area and the sound system and other equipment were also packed.

Sound systems and other on-site equipment were also removed from the venue. Led by party leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, the sit-in began with his short speech at No. 26.

Addressing the gathered crowd, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman condemned the actions of the Punjab Police, who allegedly raided the houses of JI workers in an attempt to disrupt the protest.

He asked the government a rhetorical question, asking if they believed such tactics could end the sit-in. “The session has just started and it will stay here,” declared Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman.

The JI chief gathered the crowd and asked if they were prepared to extend the sit-in if necessary. He warned the government to release detained JI workers, stating, “Our flood will not stop; we have peaceful people.”

The JI leader outlined the demands of the sit-in, including the closure of IPPs and a reduction in electricity tariffs. He reiterated that the protest had just started and would continue until their demands were met.

Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman announced the implementation of Plan B and said that he would next move to Murree Road to demonstrate the strength of the party. He also mentioned that if the resistance continues, he will lead the protest to D Chowk.
