ISLAMABAD, Oct 4: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad Administration have launched the “Plastic-Free Islamabad” initiative to reduce plastic pollution and promote a cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable capital.
The initiative was launched on the directions of Federal Minister for Interior and CDA Chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Sohail Ashraf. Additional Commissioner (General) Dr Anam Fatima is overseeing the initiative, while assistant commissioners will monitor activities in their respective areas.
The campaign aims to raise public awareness about the harmful environmental impacts of single-use plastic and encourage citizens, traders, businesses, educational institutions, food outlets and other stakeholders to adopt reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Under the initiative, coordinated measures will be taken to discourage the unnecessary use of plastic bags and other single-use plastic items, promote responsible waste disposal and encourage better environmental practices across Islamabad.
Special attention will be given to markets, commercial areas, food outlets, educational institutions, parks, recreational sites and other public places. Traders and businesses are being encouraged to reduce the distribution of single-use plastic bags and offer reusable or environmentally friendly alternatives to consumers.
Citizens, particularly members of the business community, have welcomed the initiative and expressed their willingness to cooperate in efforts to reduce plastic waste and improve the urban environment.
Residents are being encouraged to say no to single-use plastic, carry reusable bags, avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and dispose of waste properly.
The initiative also aims to reduce plastic waste on roads, in markets and parks and around public spaces and drainage systems. Better waste management and reduced plastic litter can help keep urban areas cleaner while supporting healthier surroundings.
CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Sohail Ashraf said making Islamabad plastic-free was not merely an enforcement activity but a shared environmental and civic responsibility involving government institutions, citizens, traders, businesses, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
He stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on public participation and sustained cooperation from all sections of society. He said the campaign aimed to encourage positive changes in daily habits and strengthen public responsibility for the cleanliness, health and environmental sustainability of the capital.
The CDA and Islamabad Administration have urged citizens and the business community to become active partners in the campaign, saying collective efforts and small changes in daily practices can help make Islamabad cleaner, safer, healthier, greener and more sustainable for present and future generations.
