Iran has condemned Israel’s brazen admission of responsibility for the assassination of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year, calling it a “heinous crime.” The admission has now been used by Iran to justify its attacks on Israel.
According to foreign news agencies, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, wrote a letter to the UN Secretary-General on Tuesday, condemning the Israeli government’s open acknowledgment of its involvement in the assassination. This is reportedly the first time Israel has publicly admitted to such a crime.
In the letter, Iran urged the United Nations to condemn Israel’s admission. Iranian officials argued that the confession provided a justification for Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel on October 1st, when Iran launched nearly 200 missiles, targeting the Zionist state. Following the attack, millions of Israeli citizens sought shelter.
On the previous day, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had admitted that Israel had killed Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year. He stated that Israel had also targeted leaders in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon, such as Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Hassan Nasrallah, and would continue similar operations in areas like Hodeidah and Sanaa.
