In a disturbing development, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas aircraft met with an accident during operational training near Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer today.
The pilot, who demonstrated extraordinary skill and presence of mind, successfully ejected from the plane shortly before the crash.
The incident is the first of its kind involving the indigenous aircraft LCA Tejas, an effective platform designed for air combat, strike air support, reconnaissance and anti-ship operations. Manufactured by state-owned aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the Tejas is of significant strategic importance in strengthening India’s air defense capabilities.
A court of inquiry was immediately launched to determine the cause of the accident, emphasizing the Indian Air Force’s commitment to the safety and reliability of its fleet.
The crash site, located around 100 kilometers from the Pokhran desert where the major military exercise ‘Bharat Shakti’ was underway, witnessed a swift response from the authorities. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were reported in the area.

Christened with the Sanskrit term ‘Tejas’ meaning ‘radiance’, the Tejas aircraft embodies India’s aspirations for self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing. Initiated by the Government of India in 1984, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program culminated in the development of this state-of-the-art supersonic fighter aircraft under the supervision of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
While the incident highlights the inherent risks associated with rigorous training and operational missions, it also highlights the effectiveness of security protocols and the skillful training provided to IAF personnel.
This unfortunate incident follows the recent incident involving a Hawk trainer aircraft in West Bengal where both pilots successfully ejected before the aircraft crashed in a civilian area near the Kalaikunda Air Station.
As the investigation into the Jaisalmer crash continues, the Indian Air Force remains steadfast in its commitment to maintain the highest standards of operational readiness and safety in its fleet and to ensure the protection of personnel and assets in the service of national defence.
