NEW DELHI: India’s defense ministry has signed contracts to buy nuclear-capable BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles at a cost of 195.2 billion rupees ($2.36 billion) for the Indian Navy, an official statement said on Friday.
“A contract for procurement of BrahMos missiles has been signed with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited for Rs 19,518.65 crore (Rs 195.2 billion). These missiles would be used to meet the combat equipment and training requirements of the Indian Navy,” the ministry said in a statement.
The contract was one of five major capital acquisition contracts signed by India’s defense ministry to further strengthen the make-in-India initiative on Friday, the ministry said.

The five contracts, the ministry said, include procurement of aircraft engines for MiG-29 aircraft; close range weapon system and acquisition of high performance radar and acquisition of Shipborne Brahmos system for Indian Defense Forces.
Last month, the government’s security committee approved the purchase of more than 200 BrahMos extended-range supersonic missiles for deployment on its warships.
