India to continue deporting Myanmar nationals who fled fighting

NEW DELHI: India will continue deporting Myanmar nationals who have crossed into the country fleeing the ongoing ethnic conflict in Myanmar, officials said on Saturday.

On Friday, the first batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India “illegally” were deported, said Biren Singh, chief minister of Manipur state.

“The number is huge, so we cannot deport (them) all at once. So, piece by piece, we are deporting and there are some legal procedures that we have to take…we are following them (procedures),” Singh told reporters in Manipur on Saturday and he added that the deportation will continue.

Hundreds of people, including security personnel, from Myanmar, which is mired in internal ethnic conflict, have so far crossed into India and Bangladesh.

According to officials, a total of 6,746 Myanmar nationals were detected crossing the border “illegally” in the state between May 3, 2023, and February 27 this year.
