RAWALPINDI: Doctors at Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi have successfully performed a complex replantation surgery to reattach the completely severed hand of a five-year-old boy from Jhelum.
According to details, the child’s hand was completely severed in an accident involving a sharp agricultural tool. He was brought to Holy Family Hospital on August 28 in critical condition, where doctors immediately assessed the injury and decided to perform emergency surgery.
A specialist team from the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, led by Dr Tayyab and Dr Ambreen, carried out the complicated procedure. Using advanced microsurgical and microvascular techniques, the surgeons reconnected the severed hand with the child’s body.
During the lengthy operation, the medical team meticulously repaired blood vessels, veins and other vital structures. Blood circulation to the reattached hand was successfully restored following the procedure.
Doctors told Hum News that hand replantation in a young child is a highly complex and time-sensitive procedure. They emphasized that the chances of successful reattachment depend heavily on rapid transportation to a specialized medical facility, proper preservation of the severed body part and the availability of an experienced microsurgical team.
What to Do If a Body Part Is Severed
Doctors advised the public that if an accident results in the amputation of a body part, it should not be placed directly on ice.
Instead, the severed part should be placed in a clean plastic bag. The sealed bag should then be placed in a separate container surrounded by ice, while ensuring that the tissue itself does not come into direct contact with the ice.
The patient should be transported immediately to a medical facility equipped with microsurgical services.
The successful operation at Holy Family Hospital highlights the importance of timely emergency care and specialized microsurgery in saving and restoring severely injured limbs.
