ISLAMABAD: Heavy rainfall triggered severe urban flooding along Park Road and adjoining areas on Thursday, with residents alleging that poor planning and the blockage of natural drainage channels during the development of the Margalla Orchard Housing Scheme contributed to the inundation.
Several feet of rainwater accumulated on the road, submerging multiple vehicles and leaving thousands of commuters stranded in prolonged traffic congestion.
Residents claimed that the housing project’s development obstructed natural streams and seasonal waterways, preventing the smooth flow of rainwater. According to local residents, the diverted runoff entered nearby residential areas and major roads, significantly increasing the risk of urban flooding during heavy rainfall.
The flooding brought traffic on Park Road to a standstill, with many vehicles becoming trapped in deep water and motorists facing hours-long delays.
Residents also expressed concern over what they described as the delayed response of civic authorities, alleging that officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the Metropolitan Corporation and other relevant agencies were not present at the site for several hours after the flooding began.
The affected residents have called for an immediate inquiry into the planning and approval of the Margalla Orchard Housing Scheme, particularly regarding the alleged obstruction of natural drainage channels. They have urged the authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against those found responsible, if any violations are established.
