New research suggests that heart health may be the biggest risk factor for dementia in the future. Research has shown a link between tobacco use over time and other factors related to heart health and dementia.
The results show that measures taken to improve heart health can prevent future cases of dementia. An estimated 944,000 people in the UK alone suffer from dementia, with more than half the population knowing someone with the condition.
In a recent study, researchers from University College London analyzed 27 studies. The study collected data on the incidence of dementia worldwide between 1947 and 2015.
Dr. Nahid Mahdom, lead author of the study, said that cardiovascular risk factors contribute more to the risk of dementia over time. Therefore, special intervention for heart health is needed to prevent dementia in the future.
