Gujarat Titans out of IPL play-off race after washout

Gujarat

Ahmedabad – Gujarat Titans were eliminated from the playoffs after they were forced to abandon their IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders without a ball in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Both teams secured a best-of-two finish for table-toppers Kolkata, who remained the only side to qualify for the next round with a point each.

Kolkata last finished in the top two of the league, winning the competition in 2012 and 2014.

The top four teams will play a play-off, but the first and second-placed sides have the advantage of two chances to qualify for the final on May 26 in Purwakarta.

Unseasonal rain in Ahmedabad brought cheers to thousands of fans at the world’s largest cricket stadium. The two captains finally applauded before the rain continued for almost five hours.

Shubman Gill-led Gujarat, who won the IPL in their first season under Hardik Pandya in 2022, join Mumbai Indians and bottom-placed Kings Punjab in the title race.

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata is the team that has overtaken the second-placed Rajasthan Royals in this edition with 10 wins from 13 matches and 19 points.

Six teams, including defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challenger Bengaluru, are chasing the remaining three playoff spots.
