Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi on Sunday appointed former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten as the white ball coach of the Pakistan national cricket team.
In a joint press conference with PCB COO Salman Nasser and former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, Naqvi announced former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie as the red-ball coach for Pakistan.
Mahmood was appointed as Pakistan’s assistant coach.
He said the Pakistan women’s coach would also be announced soon.
“Everyone has watched the team play by standing together. The problem is rife with differences. PCB’s task is not to collect money but to spend it on cricket,” said Naqvi.
“Work is underway to modernize the stadium. There are problems that need to be solved in the stadium. The stadium in Karawang is in a very bad condition.”
Meanwhile, between 1993 and 2004, Kirsten played 101 Tests and 185 one-day internationals for South Africa. He also guided India to victory in the 2011 50-over World Cup.
Next month, Kirsten will begin her adventure with a tour of England where Pakistan will play four T20Is. “It’s important to understand the team’s current situation and make a plan that addresses our needs,” Kirsten said. “Winning the global tournament is difficult, but it is still our main goal. Whether it is the upcoming tournament in June or the next event, success in this tournament is extraordinary.”
Meanwhile, Gillespie, 49, had an impressive career with 71 Tests and 97 ODIs for Australia. His coaching skills were demonstrated when he led Yorkshire to the Premier League title in 2014 and 2015.
“Bringing a championship to the Pakistan cricket team is an important milestone for any coach, given its rich history and loyal supporters,” Gillespie said.
