At least 50 people have died and thousands of homes have been destroyed after heavy rains and floods ravaged Afghanistan’s Gor province. Death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
Heavy seasonal rains cause flooding, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. 50 people have been confirmed dead in Gor province, and dozens more are missing.
The flood destroyed thousands of houses, hundreds of hectares of farmland and thousands of trees. In the provincial capital Firoz Koh, more than 2,000 houses were completely destroyed, 4,000 partially damaged and more than 2,000 shops were under water.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees reported that 315 people were killed and more than 1,600 injured in floods in northern Afghanistan.
Survivors lack adequate humanitarian assistance, leaving them without homes, land or food. The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) says much of the worst-hit Bagla in the north is inaccessible by truck.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is working with Afghan and international NGOs to assess the situation and provide emergency relief services, including temporary housing, to the displaced.
The water caused widespread damage and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
