FJWU Launches Rs100 Million Solar Energy Project

RAWALPINDI: Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) has inaugurated a 756.38-kilowatt-peak (kWp) grid-tied solar power system worth Rs100 million, marking a major step towards renewable energy and sustainable campus development.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar inaugurated the solarisation project at FJWU in Rawalpindi on August 6, 2026. The project has been jointly funded by the HEC and the university.

The solar system is expected to reduce FJWU’s reliance on conventional electricity, lower energy costs and help reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

Solar Project to Deliver Long-Term Savings

Vice Chancellor FJWU Prof Dr Bushra Mirza highlighted the university’s focus on sustainability, innovation and responsible resource management.

She said the shift towards renewable energy was part of FJWU’s broader vision of developing an environmentally responsible and energy-efficient institution.

According to project estimates, the Rs100 million investment is expected to be recovered within approximately 2.5 to 2.8 years through energy savings, making the project a significant long-term financial initiative for the university.

Renewable Energy and Climate Benefits

The 756.38 kWp grid-tied system is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional electricity generation.

The initiative supports wider efforts to expand renewable energy use and promote climate-conscious development in Pakistan, while demonstrating how educational institutions can reduce energy costs alongside their environmental impact.

With the solarisation project now operational, FJWU aims to move towards a cleaner and more energy-efficient campus while strengthening its commitment to sustainable development
