Fishermen are usually thrilled when they catch a large fish in their nets, but in Norway, a fisherman was shocked to hear that an American submarine had become trapped in his net.
This surprising incident occurred in the Malangen Fjord region of Norway.
According to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, fisherman Harald Engen was delivering a Halibut fish caught near his home when he received an unusual message. He was informed that the submarine’s propellers had become tangled in his nets and had dragged him two nautical miles away. The 377-foot long nuclear-powered American submarine USS Virginia was heading toward the Norwegian port of Tromso.
Norwegian Coast Guards confirmed that one of their vessels cut the net to help free the submarine.
The fisherman said, “I know other vessels pass near the fishing nets, but none of us have ever heard of a submarine doing the same.”
He added that he wasn’t angry about the incident, and the Coast Guard has been in contact with him regarding possible compensation.
On the other hand, a spokesperson for the U.S. military also confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
