KHUZDAR: A water resource management initiative in Khuzdar is helping communities cope with water scarcity and climate-related challenges while supporting agriculture and livestock-based livelihoods.
The initiative is being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) under the European Union-funded Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Programme (RBWRP), which focuses on strengthening integrated water resource management across the province.
In Naal, Khuzdar, limited rainfall makes water availability a major challenge for local communities, farmers and livestock owners. Access to reliable water is particularly important for agricultural production and livestock-dependent households.
As part of the programme, FAO has supported the rehabilitation of water channels in the area. The improved water infrastructure is helping communities manage available water more effectively and support farming and livestock activities.
For Farzana and other community members, the rehabilitation of the water channels is providing practical support for their agriculture and livestock-based livelihoods.
Her experience is being featured as the second story in FAO’s World Food Day 2026 series, highlighting initiatives in Balochistan that are helping communities respond to water scarcity and climate shocks.
The project demonstrates how improved water management can contribute to climate resilience, strengthen rural livelihoods and support food security in water-stressed communities.
Efficient management of limited water resources is also important for building more sustainable agrifood systems in regions increasingly exposed to climate and water-related pressures.
