PESHAWAR: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has provided 85,000 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives Department to support livestock health and strengthen disease control across the province.
According to FAO, around 40,000 cattle and buffaloes will be vaccinated in the merged districts of Khyber, Bajaur, Mohmand and Orakzai under the Livelihood and Food Security Activity (LFSA).
Another 45,000 animals will receive FMD vaccinations in Buner, Swat and Swabi under the Emergency Support to Restore Agricultural Livelihoods and Food Security of Flood-Affected Households project.
FMD is a highly contagious livestock disease that can affect animal health and productivity, with potential impacts on farming households, food security and rural incomes.
FAO said the vaccine support would contribute to strengthening FMD prevention and control, protecting livestock assets and supporting the livelihoods of farming communities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The vaccination campaign is particularly important for communities that depend heavily on livestock for household income, food and agricultural activities.
Strengthening animal disease prevention can also support more resilient rural livelihoods by reducing the risk of livestock losses and helping farming communities maintain their productive assets.
