Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that Rishabh Pant’s experience in the middle order can give him an upper hand over Sanju Samson as India’s wicketkeeper-batsman in the Twenty20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.
Although both the players have made it to the 15-member Indian squad for the tournament, Gambhir said only one will feature from the starting XI.
Pant’s inclusion in the squad came after a fatal car accident in December 2022, after his strong performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) caught the attention of the selectors.
Gambhir, who played a key role in India’s 2007 World Cup victory, said Pant was a perfect fit because of his left-handed batting style and versatility in the middle order.
“Pant’s consistent performance in the IPL, especially batting at number five, six and seven, provides India with a wicketkeeper in a crucial position in the middle order,” said Gambhir.
Gambhir recognized Samson’s bravery and said that if Samson proved more effective in the lower order, India could consider him for that role.
