In a recent statement, former Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour hailed Shubman Gill’s potential after the young batsman was named vice-captain for India’s white-ball formats.
Gill, who recently led India to a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe in the T20Is, has been named vice-captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, a move strongly supported by Rathour.
Rathour, who served as India’s batsman from 2019 to 2024, expressed confidence that Gill’s new role will improve his performance and leadership skills.
Rathour drew parallels with previous Indian captains and suggested that Gill’s leadership could mirror the success of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“Captaincy has historically taken players like Kohli and Sharma to greater heights. Although Gill is not yet a captain, being part of the leadership group will undoubtedly enhance his abilities,” Rathour added.
Having worked closely with Gill over the past five years, Rathour praised the 24-year-old’s game awareness and adaptability.
His understanding of the game, especially in different situations, is remarkable for someone his age. Gill has shown an impressive insight into how to handle challenges and situations on the field,” concluded Rathour.
