The study, which analyzed data from nearly 202,000 participants over 10 years, found a striking link between drinking these beverages and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a dangerous irregular heartbeat.
According to the findings, individuals who consumed two liters or more per week of artificially sweetened beverages faced a 20% higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared to those who abstained from these beverages altogether.
In addition, the risk was also increased in those who consumed drinks with added sugar, although to a lesser extent, with a 10% increase in risk observed.
The implications of these findings are significant, especially considering the widespread consumption of diet drinks as an alternative to sugary drinks.
Dr. Ningjian Wang, lead author of the study, emphasized the importance of rethinking beverage choices and cautioned against assuming that artificially sweetened, low-sugar, low-calorie beverages are inherently healthy.
