In a revolutionary development in the medical field, the organs of a deceased individual have brought new hope and life to seven people, representing an unprecedented milestone in the country’s medical history. The remarkable act unfolded after the death of 31-year-old Uzair bin Yasin from Rawalpindi, who pledged to donate his organs after his death. As a result, Uzair’s organs were successfully transplanted into seven recipients.
Both of Uzair’s kidneys and his eyes were transplanted to four patients, the liver was transplanted to an adult patient and a child because he was healthy. Dr. Saeed Akhtar, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI), highlighted the significance of this achievement during a press conference in Lahore. He expressed gratitude to the Punjab government for its support and emphasized that such groundbreaking efforts would not have been possible without the government’s support.
Dr. Akhtar emphasized the importance of promoting organ donation and emphasized the vital role it plays in saving lives and improving the quality of life of patients awaiting transplants. He also praised the joint efforts of the participating medical teams of five consultants and 15 surgeons whose dedication and expertise ensured the success of the transplant procedures. Among the recipients of Uzair’s donated organs were Atiqur Rehman, a 50-year-old individual from Lahore who received part of his liver, and six-year-old Hamdan from Kohat who underwent a liver transplant.
Additionally, 23-year-old Hasnain from Lahore received a donated pancreas from an urgent need, offering hope and healing to those in urgent need of organ transplants. Liver and historical pancreas transplant was done at PKLI Lahore, said Dr. Faisal, while the kidneys were transplanted at a private hospital and the eyes at Shifa International Hospital. Dr. Faisal, Dean of PKLI, highlighted the importance of transplant procedures, including Pakistan’s first-ever split liver transplant performed at PKLI.
He reiterated the importance of organ donation and highlighted the transformative impact it can have on individuals’ lives.
