KARACHI: Customs Enforcement officials in Karachi seized a consignment of smuggled mobile phones worth approximately Rs 62 million during an intelligence-based operation conducted on Thursday morning, according to a statement issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Intelligence leads to interception
The operation was carried out by the Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) of the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement after receiving information about a Mazda truck transporting smuggled mobile phones from Balochistan to Karachi.
Truck stopped at Hamdard Checkpost
A Mazda truck bearing registration number NAF-859 was intercepted at the Hamdard Checkpost while approaching Karachi from Sakran Road. The vehicle was later shifted to the CPF Warehouse for a detailed examination.
803 mobile phones recovered from concealed cavity
During inspection, customs officials recovered 803 mobile phones of various brands, including iPhone, Vivo, Google Pixel, Infinix, and Spark. The devices were found concealed inside a specially constructed cavity within the vehicle.
Customs Enforcement officials estimated the value of the seized mobile phones at around Rs 62 million. The Mazda truck used for transportation was valued at approximately Rs 25 million, bringing the total value of the case to about Rs 87 million.
Driver, helper detained; FIR being registered
The driver and helper were taken into custody following the recovery. Officials said further legal proceedings are underway, and a first information report (FIR) is being registered under the relevant provisions of law.
