Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is facing increasing legal challenges after the former prime minister and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 14 years in prison and heavy penalties in the Toshakhana case by an accountability court. Judge Muhammad Bashir of the Accountability Court found the pair guilty and fined them Rs1.573 billion (787 million each), in addition to disqualifying the former prime minister for ten years. In the earlier hearing, held in the Adiala jail, Bushra Bibi’s statement was taken by the court under Section 342.
Khan told the judge that his wife was humiliated to be forced into the case and had nothing to do with it.
Asking Khan if he had taped his remarks, Judge Bashir opened today’s hearing. In response, the former prime minister stated he would turn in his statement as soon as his attorneys showed up.
The PTI founder claimed, “I was duped because I was only called to confirm my attendance at the hearing.”
However, Khan’s jail trial in Toshakhana and the £190 million settlement charges were deemed to have been duly notified by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The PTI founder’s arguments against the jail trial in procedures initiated by the National Accountability Bureau were also rejected by the court.
Apparently, there was no “malice” involved, but the trial in jail was convened because of the petitioner’s threats against his life.
