New Zealand all-rounder Colin Munro has been offered to participate in international cricket after being left out of the Black Caps T20 World Cup squad.
Despite the 37-year-old left-hander’s international debut in a T20I match against India in 2020, Munro is already hoping to bounce back with impressive performances in T20 cricket franchises like the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
“Despite contact, I want to return based on my experience in the T20 franchise circuit,” Munro said in a statement on Friday.
Durban-born Munro scored 122 wickets for New Zealand in the 2012 T20Is against South Africa and the only Test against the Proteas in 2013.
His 47-wicket century against West Indies at Mt Maunganui in 2018 is a new record for New Zealand’s fastest T20 century, while three T20I hundreds provide the distinction.
Additionally, his lightning-quick 14-wicket half-century against Sri Lanka at Auckland’s Eden Park in 2016 was New Zealand’s fastest in T20Is and the fourth fastest in the world.
While his bid for T20 World Cup glory fell short, Munro featured for New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup final defeat against hosts England.
While Munro is focused on continuing franchise cricket, his legacy lives on in the shorter formats, hailed as an icon of aggressive, “360-degree style” batting, as New Zealand Cricket chief Scott Weenink praised.
Weenink hailed Munro’s pioneering spirit and said, “He took calculated risks to unprecedented heights, ushering in a paradigm shift in the dynamics of short-form cricket. We wholeheartedly thank him for his outstanding contribution in over a century of international cricket.”
