CDA Plans Water Supply System Revamp in Rawal Town to Improve Pressure and Cut Power Costs

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has started steps to improve the water supply system in Rawal Town, with a focus on better water pressure, more reliable supply and lower electricity and operational costs.

On special directions of the CDA Chairman, Director General Islamabad Water visited Rawal Town on Sunday, October 4, 2026, and inspected the water supply network and related facilities in the area.

During the visit, officials found that the water supply network in Rawal Town was laid in 1995. However, due to alleged negligence by the contractor, only around 20 percent of the planned connections were installed, leaving the remaining work incomplete.

The Director General directed the relevant officials to complete all outstanding connections immediately while ensuring the required quality standards.

The inspection also found that five tube wells are currently being operated for 12 to 18 hours a day through a direct-injection system. Officials said the arrangement was resulting in excessive pumping and high electricity costs.

To address the issue, the Director General directed that the water supply system be shifted to an indirect system using an underground sump and overhead tank. Under the proposed arrangement, water would be supplied in two controlled periods of around two to three hours each day.

Officials said the estimate for the rehabilitation of the sump and overhead tank is already at the final stage of approval.

Once the storage system becomes operational, the running time of the tube wells is expected to fall to around six to eight hours a day. The move is expected to reduce electricity consumption while improving water pressure and supply in both upper and lower parts of the area.

The same model is already operational in Shahzad Town, where two tube wells reportedly operate for around six hours a day and supply water to the entire area.

Under the same approach, an estimate for the construction and rehabilitation of an underground storage tank in Margalla/Margazar Town has also been submitted for approval.

The proposed system is expected to provide Rawal Town residents with better water pressure and a more regular supply while reducing CDA’s electricity bills and operation and maintenance costs.

The initiative also reflects the importance of efficient water storage and distribution systems in managing urban water resources and reducing unnecessary energy use.
