Brazil Election: Lula da Silva Makes History With Fourth Presidential Victory

BRASILIA: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has made history by winning the country’s presidential runoff and securing a fourth term in office.

According to election authorities, Lula da Silva defeated right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro in the second round of the presidential election. Lula received 51.75 percent of the vote, while Bolsonaro secured 48.25 percent.

The voting process was extended by two hours after an unusual last-minute decision by Brazil’s Supreme Court. Authorities cited transportation-related difficulties as the reason for extending voting hours.

Following the result, Bolsonaro reportedly refused to accept defeat and decided to challenge the election outcome.

Lula’s victory marks a historic moment in Brazilian politics, as he becomes president for the fourth time.
