According to Indian media, Mumbai’s Andheri Magistrate Court has sentenced filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to 3 months in prison in a 7-year-old cheque bounce case.
The director of famous films like Satya and Rangeela, Ram Gopal Varma, was not present in court during the hearing, which led the court to issue a non-bailable warrant against him.
The court also ordered Varma to pay ₹3,72,219 to the complainant company, “Shree,” which deals in hard disks. The company’s lawyers told the court that the dispute began in 2018 when the company supplied hard disks to Varma’s production company upon request. Between February and March 2018, tax invoices amounting to ₹2,38,220 were issued.
According to the complainant, Varma’s company issued a cheque on June 1, 2018, but it bounced due to insufficient funds. The company then issued a second cheque on August 22, 2018, assuring payment, but this cheque also bounced.
The company made several attempts to recover the money and sent legal notices to Ram Gopal Varma.
In response to the case, Ram Gopal Varma issued a clarification, stating that this is a 7-year-old case involving an amount of ₹2,38,220 linked to a former employee.
