NEW DELHI: Hindu extremist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a humiliating defeat in the Indian elections in Ayodhya.
According to Indian media, candidate Modi suffered a humiliating defeat in the election, despite having built a Ram Temple instead of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya. From Faizabad constituency, senior BJP leader Lallu Singh defeated Samajwadi Party’s Awadhesh Prasad by 56,000 votes.
In Amethi, senior BJP leader and Modi cabinet minister Smriti Irani suffered a heavy defeat. Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi in yesterday’s elections, defeated Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma by 372,000 votes.
On the other hand, in Hyderabad Deccan, Madhuri Latha, who sprayed poison on Muslims during the election campaign and fired symbolic bullets at mosques, lost to Asaduddin Owaisi by a margin of over 330,000 votes.
Elections to the 543 Lok Sabha seats in India began on April 19 and the elections were held in seven phases in all states and unions till June 1. More than 970 million people voted during the election.
