Ken Nagayoshi scored from a penalty corner to give Japan the lead in the 33rd minute.
Interestingly, the Green Shirts managed to hold their nerve in the final minutes of the game, thanks to the brilliance of Rana Waheed Ashraf who scored a goal to avoid defeat.
Pakistan play their fourth match against Canada on today May 8. The man in the green locks horns with New Zealand on May 10.
Pakistan hockey team beat South Korea 5-4 in Azlan Shah Cup on Sunday.
The Green Shirts beat Korea 4-0. Hannan Shahid, Arshad Liaqat, Ghazanfar Ali and Sufyan Khan took four wickets each to lead Pakistan past Korea.
It was Pakistan’s second win of the tournament. Earlier, the visitors won 5-4 against Malaysia.
