ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Wednesday called on newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif – their first meeting since Shehbaz assumed office.
Important matters including national security were discussed in the meeting, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.
Issues related to operational matters of the Pakistan Army and defense situation were also discussed.
The army chief also congratulated the prime minister on his newly assumed post and expressed his best wishes, the PMO statement added.
On Tuesday, the prime minister met a PPP delegation led by Zardari in the presence of party chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The PMO said the former president assured Prime Minister Shehbaz of the PPP’s support to the new government and its efforts for economic stability, development, and prosperity of the country.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz won the prime ministerial election after getting 201 votes against his PTI-backed opponent, Omar Ayub Khan.
Shahbaz was sworn in on Monday in a simple but impressive ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr attended by service chiefs, government functionaries, and senior politicians from the ruling coalition parties and other officers.
