Karachi: An American woman who traveled to Pakistan for love is now facing new legal complications.
Oniya Andrew Robinson arrived in Pakistan on October 11 on a tourist visa, having fallen in love with a young man from Karachi. However, after her visa expired on November 10, she did not leave the country. Since then, she has faced various difficulties, initially struggling to find a place to stay and later encountering several challenges.
Her visa and airline ticket both expired, prompting the intervention of the Sindh Governor, who facilitated an exit permit for her. A welfare organization also arranged a ticket for her return.
Despite efforts to send her back, she refused to leave at the airport and complained that she was being forced to return, leading to her offloading from the flight.
After leaving the airport, she unexpectedly showed up at her lover’s apartment in the Garden area of Karachi and started living in the building’s parking lot. The police later handed her over to a welfare organization, and due to health concerns, she was transferred to a hospital.
Currently, Oniya is undergoing treatment at Jinnah Hospital, where security arrangements have also been made for her.
According to media reports, FIA immigration officials have informed her of the legal complications she may face. Her exit permit is set to expire on February 11. If she does not leave by then, she could be prosecuted under the Foreigners Act of 1946, which would lead to her arrest, a court hearing, and eventual deportation.
However, media sources suggest that the government has the authority to extend her exit permit and provide her another opportunity to leave voluntarily on humanitarian grounds.
