AI Geo Navigators’ Future Leadership Internship Programme Enters Week 05 with Geospatial AI Training and Climate Policy Webinar

Interns explored machine learning for satellite-based land-cover mapping and discussed the implementation of the Paris Agreement with GCISC Executive Director Arif Goheer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, 20 August 2026 – Week 05 of the Future Leadership Internship Programme 2026, organized by AI Geo Navigators, combined technical training in artificial intelligence and machine learning for geospatial applications with an expert webinar on climate science, public policy and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The fully virtual nationwide programme brings together students, graduates and early-career professionals from across Pakistan, providing participants with opportunities to strengthen their technical knowledge, engage with industry professionals and connect geospatial technologies with real-world climate and environmental challenges.
During Week 05, interns participated in a technical session titled “Introduction to AI/ML for Geospatial Applications.” The session introduced participants to key concepts including features and labels, training and testing datasets, classification and regression, land-cover classification, model prediction, validation and accuracy assessment.
The session provided participants with an understanding of how machine-learning techniques can be applied to satellite and geospatial data to identify and classify different types of land cover. The training also highlighted the importance of model validation and accuracy assessment when developing reliable geospatial solutions.
The second major activity of Week 05 was a live webinar titled “Climate Science, Policy and the Paris Agreement,” held on Sunday, 20 August 2026. The session featured Arif Goheer, Executive Director of the Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC).
The webinar examined how scientific evidence and international climate commitments can be translated into measurable national action. Discussions covered climate science and policy leadership, global climate governance, the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body, the Technology Executive Committee, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) processes, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and climate-policy implementation in Pakistan.
By bringing technical learning and climate-policy discussions together, Week 05 enabled interns to explore how machine-learning models can support satellite-based land-cover classification while also understanding how scientific and geospatial information can contribute to climate reporting, adaptation planning and evidence-based decision-making.
Participants also gained insight into the role of GCISC as a scientific research institution under the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, and the importance of scientific research in informing climate-related policies and planning in Pakistan.
The programme began with its orientation on 9 July 2026, where Asim Javid, Chief Executive Officer of AI Geo Navigators, highlighted the importance of investing in Pakistan’s youth and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing mentorship, incentives and meaningful exposure to industry practices.
Anmol Asim, Co-Founder of AI Geo Navigators, highlighted the company’s work in integrating artificial intelligence with GIS and remote sensing to develop actionable climate and environmental insights.
Musfira Akaash, Programme Manager, emphasised the programme’s focus on helping participants move beyond classroom learning and develop practical, industry-relevant skills through technical sessions, expert interactions and applied learning opportunities.
The Future Leadership Internship Programme 2026 is an eight-week nationwide virtual initiative covering GIS, remote sensing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, climate-risk assessment and hazard mapping. With Week 05 now completed, the programme will continue with further learning activities and professional development opportunities for participants in the upcoming weeks.
