ABU DHABI: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), has issued Resolution No. (2) of 2026 aimed at strengthening the protection of species and natural habitats across the emirate.
The resolution seeks to enhance biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection and environmental sustainability, while maintaining a balance between environmental protection and sustainable development.
According to the EAD, the new legislation forms part of Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to protect native species and their natural habitats and ensure the long-term sustainability of ecosystems for future generations.
The resolution establishes an integrated framework covering the protection of terrestrial and marine species and habitats. It includes measures for habitat conservation, the designation of areas for biodiversity protection, and the restoration and rehabilitation of degraded habitats and affected species.
Its provisions apply to terrestrial and marine habitats across Abu Dhabi, including areas identified as important for biodiversity conservation outside formally protected areas. They also cover native and migratory species listed by the EAD.
Invasive and non-native species are excluded from the scope of the resolution.
The legislation introduces a range of requirements and procedures governing activities that could affect species and habitats. It also establishes environmental requirements designed to minimise negative impacts on biodiversity.
The EAD said the resolution reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to developing a stronger environmental and legislative framework, promoting the sustainable management of natural resources and protecting ecologically important species and habitats.
The agency also called on community members, government institutions and private-sector organisations to comply with the new controls and procedures and play an active role in protecting nature and conserving biodiversity.
The measure is expected to support Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of building a more sustainable and climate-resilient future while preserving its terrestrial and marine ecosystems for generations to come.
