Rachin Ravindra smashed his way to a stunning 46 runs and took three crucial catches to propel defending champions Chennai Super Kings to their second straight IPL triumph with an impressive 63-run victory over Gujarat Titans at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday.
Left-handed Ravindra, making his debut in the IPL arena, showcased his prowess as he smashed his 46 off just 20 deliveries, while skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad mirrored his performance with an equally impressive knock of 46 runs. Their partnership laid the foundation for Chennai’s impressive total of 206-6 at the M.A. Stadium. Chidambaram.
The trio of bowlers – Mustafizur Rahman, Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande – orchestrated Gujarat’s downfall by scalping two wickets each, restricting them to a modest 143-8, Gujarat’s biggest defeat in terms of runs in the IPL.
Shivam Dube emerged as Chennai’s batting powerhouse as he blasted his way to a blistering 51 off just 23 balls to boost the total after a stellar start provided by Ravindra and Gaikwad’s opening partnership of 62 runs.
Earlier, MS veteran Dhoni handed over the reins of captaincy to Gaikwad despite leading Chennai to a fifth IPL title the previous year.
Despite the early scare, Gaikwad seized the opportunity and used the dropped chances to anchor the innings. Meanwhile, Ravindra continued his onslaught, smashing three sixes and six fours before falling short of his half-century to wizard Rashid Khan, who had insulted him.
Gujarat’s hopes were further dashed when their opener, Shubman Gill, walked out to Chahar, leaving them to struggle in the chase. Gill, who recently took over the reins, tasted success in his opening match following the departure of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians.
As the tournament progresses, the excitement builds, setting the stage for a thrilling final to be held in Chennai on May 26.
