Farmers Urged to Adopt Climate-Resilient Wheat Varieties and Modern Farming Practices

FAISALABAD, October 29, 2026: Farmers have been urged to adopt certified wheat seeds, improved production technologies and sustainable soil management practices to increase crop yields, improve profitability and strengthen Pakistan’s food security.

The recommendations were shared by Muhammad Owais, Senior Scientist at the Wheat Research Institute (WRI), Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, during a farmers’ seminar on “Profitable Cultivation of Wheat and Winter Vegetables”, organised by Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited (FFC).

Addressing the participants, Owais highlighted the role of AARI and WRI in strengthening national food security through the development of high-yielding, climate-resilient wheat varieties and the transfer of improved agricultural technologies to farmers.

Farmers Advised to Use Certified Seeds

The scientist advised farmers to use certified seeds of approved wheat varieties to ensure better germination, genetic purity and improved crop yields.

He also emphasised the importance of timely sowing, balanced fertiliser application, effective weed control and appropriate irrigation practices for achieving better production results.

To maintain soil health and fertility, farmers were encouraged to increase organic matter through the use of farmyard manure, crop residue management and green manuring.

Owais also highlighted drill sowing as an effective mechanised practice that can help ensure uniform crop establishment, reduce seed wastage and improve yield potential.

Recommended Wheat Varieties

The following wheat varieties were highlighted for farmers’ consideration:

  • Falak-24
  • Savera-24
  • Urooj-22
  • Dilkash-20
  • Akbar-19
  • Champion-23
  • Nishan-21

Farmers were encouraged to select suitable varieties in line with local growing conditions and follow the recommended production practices to achieve better results.

Wheat Support Price and Farm Profitability

The seminar also covered the role of the wheat support price in encouraging cultivation and helping farmers maintain the profitability of wheat production.

The discussions highlighted the importance of combining improved seed varieties, modern farming techniques and sound agricultural management to raise yields while using available resources more efficiently.

The adoption of these practices could help improve Pakistan’s average wheat yield, strengthen domestic food supplies and support a more resilient agricultural sector amid growing climate challenges.
