ISLAMABAD, October 29, 2026 — Riphah International University’s Faculty of Computing and Cyber Infinity Society organised a cybersecurity awareness seminar at its Gulberg Green Campus on October 28, highlighting the growing risks of online fraud, financial scams and emerging digital threats.
Held in recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the seminar aimed to promote safe online practices, responsible digital behaviour and greater public understanding of cybersecurity challenges.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Tahira Nazir and her team and brought together professionals and academic representatives to discuss practical security measures, emerging technologies and career opportunities in the cybersecurity sector.
Former FIA Official Highlights Growing Cyber Risks
Ammar Jafery, former Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and chairman of PISA, attended the seminar as chief guest.
In his address, Jafery emphasised that cybersecurity has become an essential part of everyday life rather than a concern limited to technical experts and specialised organisations.
Drawing on real-world examples, he explained how cybercriminals exploit unsuspecting users through online fraud, financial scams and deceptive digital practices. He urged participants to remain vigilant while using online platforms and to protect their personal and financial information.
Jafery described cybersecurity as a shared responsibility and encouraged professionals to raise awareness within their communities. He also proposed observing the period from October 2026 to October 2027 as a dedicated year of cybersecurity awareness to sustain public engagement and promote safer digital practices.
Experts Discuss Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence
Salman Akram, associated with the United Nations Disarmament and International Security Committee (UN DISEC), discussed real-time cybersecurity projects and their practical applications. He highlighted the importance of translating technical knowledge into initiatives that address real-world security challenges.
Addressing the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, Syed Hassaan Ali Shah, Senior Lecturer at Riphah International University’s Faculty of Computing, highlighted the importance of reliable datasets, proper data preparation and effective model training in AI-driven research.
He also emphasised ethical considerations, data integrity and security risks when developing and deploying AI-based systems.
Cybersecurity Careers and Skills in Focus
Dr. Jawaid Iqbal, In-charge of Cybersecurity at the university’s Faculty of Computing, discussed career prospects in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity sector.
He highlighted the growing need for skilled professionals and stressed the importance of technical knowledge, practical experience, continuous learning and professional development to prepare students for emerging opportunities.
The seminar also provided students with an opportunity to interact with experts, explore online security risks and understand how emerging technologies are reshaping the cybersecurity landscape.
The joint initiative by the Faculty of Computing and Cyber Infinity Society reaffirmed Riphah International University’s commitment to promoting cybersecurity awareness, responsible technology use and the development of skills needed to address digital security chal
