ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad district administration has intensified daily enforcement against banned plastic bags, confiscating 218 kilograms of polythene during separate operations across the federal capital.
Assistant commissioners conducted inspections at different locations and took action against shopkeepers found violating the ban on plastic bags. Several shopkeepers were also shifted to police stations for further legal proceedings.
The district administration said the enforcement campaign is part of efforts to make Islamabad a plastic-free city and reduce plastic pollution.
Alongside enforcement, an awareness campaign is also being conducted to encourage shopkeepers and consumers to stop using plastic bags and switch to environmentally friendly alternatives.
According to the administration, plastic pollution can create serious environmental and public health concerns. Plastic bags can accumulate in streets, drains and waterways, while improperly discarded plastic can also harm wildlife and natural ecosystems.
Officials are directing shopkeepers to completely discontinue the use of plastic bags and comply with the ban.
The district administration has also appealed to citizens to report shops that continue to use banned plastic bags and support efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
Citizens have been encouraged to use reusable cloth bags and other environmentally friendly alternatives while shopping.
The ongoing campaign highlights the importance of combining enforcement with public awareness and responsible consumer behaviour to reduce plastic waste and protect Islamabad’s environment.
