Punjab Climate Internship Programme Builds Young Leaders for Local Climate Action

LAHORE: The Chief Minister Punjab Climate Leadership Development Internship Programme is helping develop a new generation of young climate leaders through training, mentorship and practical work on climate challenges in local communities.

The programme has been jointly designed and developed by the Punjab Environmental Protection and Climate Change Department (EP&CCD) and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).

The initiative aims to equip young people with knowledge and practical skills related to climate change, environmental protection and sustainable development. Young climate warriors are trained and mentored before being placed in their respective districts to work on locally relevant environmental issues.

As part of the programme, participants have developed capstone projects addressing climate change challenges in their local contexts. These projects provide young people with an opportunity to understand environmental problems in their own communities and explore practical solutions.

The programme also promotes climate leadership and green skills among young people, encouraging them to contribute to environmental awareness, climate action and sustainable development.

Youth engagement is increasingly important for Pakistan as communities face climate-related challenges including extreme heat, flooding, water stress, environmental degradation and changing weather patterns.

By combining training, mentorship and district-level practical experience, the programme seeks to turn young people into active participants in climate action and environmental protection.

The initiative also highlights the importance of connecting climate policy and local action, enabling young leaders to contribute to environmental solutions within their own communities.

The programme represents a collaborative effort between government and research institutions to strengthen climate awareness, leadership and practical environmental action among Punjab’s youth.
