ISLAMABAD: The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad, organised a seminar titled “Beyond The Hague: Securing Pakistan’s Water Rights and Water Security” on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The seminar examined the implications of the recent Hague ruling concerning the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and discussed the wider challenges facing Pakistan’s water security beyond the legal outcome.
Speakers explored the geopolitical, strategic and diplomatic dimensions of the Indus Waters Treaty, with particular attention to developments concerning the Western Rivers and the future of the treaty.
Ambassador (retd.) Shafqat Kakakhel delivered the keynote address, while Dr Afsah Qazi, Assistant Professor at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), also spoke at the session.
The discussion focused on the broader implications of developments surrounding the treaty and the need to consider Pakistan’s long-term water-security interests in the evolving regional context.
The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session, allowing participants to exchange views on Pakistan’s water rights, water security and the future of the Indus Waters Treaty.
